Fire District 8 Paramedic Service
Spokane County Fire District 8 launched a paramedic program aimed at providing enhanced, sophisticated emergency medical care to its citizens. On November 17, 2008, firefighter/paramedics, supervised by a physician advisor, began providing service to the fire district.
The program is a result of citizen input to the agency’s strategic plan and subsequent voter support in 2007 to restore the agency’s EMS levy rate.
Fire District 8 paramedics provide advanced patient care, including medication administration, electrocardiogram monitoring, intravenous therapy, and advanced respiratory/airway care. Prior to certification, paramedics complete an intense 1,200 hour training course including classroom training, in-hospital clinical rotations, and field internships. Excellent patient care is ensured by the district’s participation at the Spokane County EMS Quality Improvement Committee, as well as internal oversight by the agency’s physician advisor, Dr. Michael Metcalf.
