A family on S. Custer knew what to do on August 18, 1998 when
a fire broke out in their basement. The smoke detector sounded the alarm and the family
immediately evacuated the house and went to their designated meeting place. They spotted
flames and smoke coming from the basement and called 911 from a neighbors. Neighbors tried
to suppress the fire with a garden hose from the exterior. A quick response from Fire
District 8 extinguished the blaze. The fire was caused by a light-bulb against a sleeping
bag in a fort that the children had made out of blankets and sleeping bags in the basement
family room.
