RESIDENT FIREFIGHTER PROGRAM

See if our program will benefit you

and your career.

HELP YOUR CAREER

Spokane County Fire District 8 offers men and women the experience of fire department activities beyond the volunteer position. Resident Firefighters are paid part-time firefighters, with the duties and responsibilities of professional firefighters. The Residents' main responsibilities include responding to fire and medical calls, operating apparatus, public education, public relations, continuing training, general station and apparatus maintenance, and covering of shifts.

EMERGENCY RESPONSE

Structure fires, wildland fires, vehicle collisions, medical aid and hazardous materials incidents are just a few of the types of calls a Resident Firefighters will respond to.

TRAINING

Training is vital to successful fire ground operations and compliance with WISHA and OSHA standards. The Resident Firefighter may be scheduled to attend approximately 266 hours of training beginning with a 92 hour training academy program or omit the training academy by using previous training credentials.

CONTINUED TRAINING

The District provides ongoing training to maintain levels of proficiency and certifications.  District trainings are regularly scheduled on Thursday evenings.

SHIFT WORK

Residents operate the same shift schedules as the full-time firefighters, with the time from 8am to 5pm being free for career advancement (such as school or work). Residents begin their shifts at 6pm and continue until 8am on weekdays. On weekends, residents are required to staff the stations on a 24 hour shift. The District, in addition to pay and training, provides a residence for the resident firefighter.
