Sunday Check your smoke detectors - if you do not have one get one and install it. - Most Fire Departments will give away detectors to persons that can't afford one.

Prepare your Escape Plan with your family - if you need a special item like an escape ladder this is the time to get one.

You can purchase escape ladders at most large hardware stores and Home Centers.

Tuesday

 

Install a fire extinguisher in fire prone areas:  the kitchen and the garage.  Place the extinguisher by the exit door.

Wednesday

 

Have a fire drill in your home. Have someone press the test button on the detector to sound the alarm and then make your escape. Time the drill and see how fast you can get out.

Thursday Perform an in home fire inspection - make sure your home is fire safe. Get rid of excess combustibles.

Friday Plan to have your furnace and chimney cleaned, check all heat appliances to make sure they are fire safe. Check light fixtures to see that they have the right wattage bulbs.

Saturday This is a good day to go outdoors and make sure your home is fire safe on the outside. Do not pile combustibles against the house or under decks. Find your nearest fire hydrant and fire station.  Visit the fire station and see how your fire department operates.  Know how long it takes to get help.
